Memories of my friend Va on the Island of Matava in Fiji, taken in 97. I have this photo framed in my bedroom, and it cheers me up, not only because Matava is a beautiful place, and the sunset was glorious that evening. Va was out looking for fish with the lady from the village, and the light was breathtaking. The visit to the Island, was to escape Suva, the capitol of Fiji for a few days and to enjoy the solitariness and beauty of this Island.
Va has since died of cancer at the age of 40, leaving behind her, two young boys, and a doting dad who gave up work to care for his kids. In the photo her presence, is merely a passing silouette, against the sea and light, just like our memories of her remain just below the surface until a fleeting moment brings her spirit to life.
